Is there a venomous spider living in my house?

Is he dangerous? Looks it. Here's he's eating a juicy fly

Having been in Colombo for a few weeks I returned to our ‘jungle pad’ in Tangalle to find a spider had spun a vast web by our front door. There are often spiders around here, as we do live in a jungle. However, this chap has all the characteristics of a venomous one.

Pointy legs, fangs, large abdomen, and, perhaps most alarmingly, bright red markings on his (her?) underside, similar to the infamous red hourglass mark on a Black Widow.

Ah, the tropics.

Sweet dreams.

  1. Hi Paul.
It looks like a female Sri Lankan Orb spider. Orb spiders are fairly common in the tropics, the female is much larger than the male. The bite is poisonous and painful to humans, but ususally not much worse than a bee sting. Enjoy your new pet 😉
